This month’s book is People and Trees: A Trilogy by Akram Aylisli.
People and Trees is a collection of three novellas and a short story that chronicles life in a rural Azerbaijani village during and after World War II, focusing on the impact of Soviet collectivization and war on traditional society through the eyes of a young boy, Sadyk, and his aunt, Medina. The book explores themes of cultural change, loss, and resilience, blending folklore with the harsh realities of the era, and is considered a significant work in Azerbaijani literature.
The trilogy, originally written in Azerbaijani and later translated into Russian in the 1970s, was translated from the Russian text into English for this edition.
