Printing Icons investigates how printing transformed the reception of medieval icons in early modern Eastern Europe, Russia, and the Balkans. It focuses on how works on paper, like pattern tracings, woodcuts, engravings, and tintypes, changed how workshops approached their craft and how printing had a significant impact on popular understanding of holy sites and saintly persons. Bringing together over forty objects from public and private collections, Printing Icons will tell the story of how printing disseminated and contextualized knowledge of medieval iconography.
