This month’s book is Cecil the Lion Had to Die by Olena Styazhkina.

Cecil the Lion Had to Die is a historical novel following four interconnected families in Donetsk, Ukraine, from the collapse of the Soviet Union to the 2014 Russian occupation of the region. The book uses the viral news event of Cecil the lion’s death as a metaphor for the senselessness of conflict and the transient nature of public attention, providing a nuanced look at how local identity and war shape Ukrainian history and personal fates.
