This icon was probably the center panel of a triptych, its side wings now lost, it represents the byzantine archetype of the Deesis meaning prayer. The Mother of God and Saint John the Baptist stand on either side of Christ praying for humanity. The figures are highly elongated, adding an atmosphere of sublime grandeur and monumentality.
