Director’s Greeting
Since that pivotal moment 20 years ago, when Gordon B. Lankton decided to share his collection with the world, the Icon Museum and Study Center has emerged as a vital hub for icons and Eastern Christian art. This year, we celebrate together the enduring power of icons through exhibitions, education, and community engagement.
As we mark our 20th anniversary, we honor the past while looking ahead to a future of continued discovery and inspiration. The collection is expanding and includes icons from Russia, Greece, Crete, Venice and Ethiopia, allowing us to present the fascinating world of icons within a wide historical and cultural context.
We invite you to be part of what comes next and to experience the beauty and spirituality of icons at your next visit to the Icon Museum and Study Center. We are deeply grateful for your support!
Simon Morsink
Executive Director of the Icon Museum and Study Center
A landmark exhibition and global symposium
The exhibition, Light from the East: Masterpieces from the Ikonen-Museum Recklinghausen, and the accompanying two-day symposium, Encountering the Sacred Image: Highlights from the Icon Museum and Study Center, embody the very mission that has guided the institution for two decades: illuminating the art of the sacred icon for a global audience and fostering deeper understanding through exceptional art and rigorous scholarship. This exhibition brings masterpieces from the Ikonen-Museum Recklinghausen in Germany, one of the world’s most important museums of Eastern Orthodox art, to the public, upholding the museum’s commitment to international collaboration and profound visitor experiences. These extraordinary works of art, many never before seen in the United States, offer an immersive exploration into the spiritual and religious traditions that have shaped Eastern Orthodox Christianity. Concurrently, the symposium affirms the Museum’s role as a center for research and dialogue, convening leading scholars to generate new knowledge and perspectives. Together, these initiatives mark the anniversary not only as a moment of celebration, but as a renewed commitment to excellence, discovery, and cultural exchange for the decades ahead.
