SUMMARY:Author talk and Q&A with Mary Kay Zuravleff
DESCRIPTION:Cost: $20 -$35\n$20 ticket includes admission to the Museum and event\n$35 tickets include admission to the Museum and event\, plus one pre-signed paperback copy of American Ending\n**Limited quantity available — book must be picked up at the Museum and will not be shipped** \nRegister\nJoin the Icon Museum and Study Center as we welcome award-winning author Mary Kay Zuravleff to discuss her book “American Ending.” Zuravleff will give an illustrated lecture\, followed by an open Q&A. \nAn Oprah pick for spring 2023\, “American Ending” follows Yelena\, the first American born to her Old Believer Russian Orthodox parents\, who are building a life in a Pennsylvania Appalachian town. This town\, in the first decades of the 20th century\, is filled with Russian transplants and a new church with a dome. Here\, boys quit grade school for the coal mines and girls are married off at fourteen. The young pair up\, give birth to more babies than they can feed\, and make shaky starts in their new world. However\, Yelena craves a different path. Will she find her own American ending or will a traditional Russian ending be her fate? In this immersive novel\, Zuravleff weaves Russian fairy tales and fables into a family saga within the storied American landscape. The challenges facing immigrants–and the fragility of citizenship–are just as unsettling and surprising today as they were 100 years ago. American Ending is a poignant reminder that everything that is happening in America has already happened.

SUMMARY:Talk with Denis A. Khotimsky: Untangling Ornamental Cyrillic
DESCRIPTION:Free with admission. \nThis talk will dive into the history and theory of Cyrillic ornamental calligraphy\, present several masterpieces\, and provide examples of deciphering a few inscriptions on icons featured in the ongoing special exhibition “Icons: Old Believers and Their World.” It will also reveal a treasure that has been hiding in plain sight for nearly two centuries and demonstrate how untangling Cyrillic Viaz’ can help to bust historical myths and expose deliberate fakes. The listeners will have an opportunity to touch and feel the original seventeenth-century antique maps.  \nEveryone who studied or just observed Orthodox icons surely noticed elaborate ornamental inscriptions that often name the image itself\, the Saint\, or the event depicted on the icon. The inscription may also appear on the scrolls or books held by the figure. According to an observation by Boris Uspensky\, “the inscriptions act as an essential component of icon-painting representations”\, which “expresses the archetype no less\, if no more\, than does the actual representation”. Furthermore\, since the early icons were intended for largely illiterate viewers\, “in general they were not designed to be understood\, but precisely establish an internal\, sacred (mystic) identification and to affirm the ontological connection between the image and the name” (Boris Uspensky).  \nThe calligraphic style of these inscriptions is known in Russian as Viaz‘\, which means “intertwining.” Combining a two-dimensional arrangement of letters with extensive use of ligatures\, Viaz’ aims to fuse a word or line into a continuous ornamental pattern. The Old-Believers mastered the art of Viaz‘ making a pattern appear more like a cryptographic puzzle than a segment of text.   \nThe same calligraphic style is often found in the titles of the books and book chapters\, church dedication plaques\, tombstone inscriptions\, the everyday objects\, and — in a few examples — on antique maps. In many of those cases\, the text is actually meant to be read\, and thus performs an informative rather than merely ontological function.  \nDenis Khotimsky\, Ph.D.\, is an engineer with a passion for the history of cartography\, who explores the evolution and graphic logic of Cyrillic Viaz’—the interlaced ornamental script that adorns many icons as well as other works of art\, including antique maps. The talk provides examples of the visual gems Viaz’ intricate letterforms may conceal and the historical mysteries they can help to untangle.

In this hands-on workshop\, you’ll explore the rich history and unique qualities of this luminous medium while developing your own creative expression. \nYou’ll learn essential techniques\, including: \n\nMixing vibrant pigment pastes from scratch\nTempering with egg yolk to create your paint\nApplying paint to the panel using both traditional methods and experimental approaches\n\nWhether you’re a beginner or experienced artist\, this workshop offers a unique opportunity to connect with a time-honored medium used by masters throughout history. Limited spots available—register today! \nAbout the workshop: \nFrom 4th-century Egyptians to medieval altarpiece artists\, to contemporary painters\, artists have chosen egg tempera for its permanence and unique luminosity. Although an ancient technique\, this fascinating medium is really very simple and economical to use. \nIn this 2-day workshop\, Kathy will demonstrate how to make tempera paints using egg yolk\, dry pigments\, and a little water. The first class will cover examples of egg tempera painting through the ages\, how to make the egg tempera paint\, the materials needed to get started\, best practices for handling pigments\, and painting techniques such as brushwork\, glazing\, sponging\, and scumbling. Sample panels will be provided\, as well as a larger panel for each student’s final painting. After the demonstration\, students will mix their own egg tempera paints\, try it out on practice panels\, and then transfer a drawing to a larger panel. \nPrerequisites:\nStudents should have some painting experience in any medium. \nAbout the Instructor:\nKathy Hodge is known for her oil paintings\, but after “inheriting” the egg tempera supplies of magic realist painter Louise Marianetti\, she became intrigued by the technique and has worked it into her studio practice. She attended RISD through her junior year as a painting major and has a BFA in painting from the Swain School of Design in New Bedford. She has exhibited her paintings in many one person shows and has been appointed Artist-in-Residence in 13 National Parks and 2 National Forests across the country. She was the recipient of a Rhode Island State Council on the Arts Painting Fellowship in 2017.

SUMMARY:Icon Painting Workshop with Ekaterina Daineko
DESCRIPTION:Limited spots available – register today! \nCost: $1\,500 for members and $1\,800 for not-yet-members \nRegister Now\n  \nThe Icon Museum is pleased to offer an 8-Day icon painting workshop with Belarusian iconographer Ekaterina Daineko\, instructor and Director of the Art Program at the Icon Institute in St. Tikhon’s Monastery. Ekaterina is classically trained in Europe and Belarus\, with a strong academic foundation in painting and drawing. \nFor Ekaterina\, icon painting is not decorative—it is a language. She believes that icons are meant to reflect heavenly light and the beauty of the divine world. But this beauty does not appear by intuition alone. \nAs a teacher\, Ekaterina emphasizes classical standards and harmony\, guiding her students through rigorous foundational work. Her goal is not speed or stylistic shortcuts\, but professional mastery—the kind that enables spiritual expression rather than superficiality. \nEkaterina is deeply committed to re-introducing icon painting in the West as a serious\, demanding art form\, not a hobby or a craft. Through discipline\, tradition\, and care for beauty\, she sees sacred art as capable of healing\, clarifying\, and orienting the human heart. \nThe course is limited to 10 students ensuring an exclusive highly focused learning environment targeted to all skill-levels using traditional egg tempera on wood panels\, a historic technique that demands precision\, patience\, and deep material knowledge. Students must supply their own brushes; all other materials will be provided. \nCancellation Policy: Please read the following policy carefully before registering. In order to keep tuition prices as low as possible and to accommodate the maximum number of students\, no exceptions to this policy will be made. Cancellations must be submitted in writing to info@iconmuseum.org; cancellations by phone are not accepted. \nUpon receipt of written cancellation\, registration fees will be refunded per the following schedule:\nOn or before March 31: 75% of registration will be refunded.\nOn or before April 18: 50% of registration will be refunded.\nAfter April 18: No refunds will be offered for any reason. \nPlease note: We are not able to offer partial refunds\, transfers\, or credits for students who do not attend the full course. \nIF YOU REGISTER AND DO NOT RECEIVE A CONFIRMATION EMAIL WITHIN 24 HOURS\, please email info@iconmuseum.org and/or check your spam folder.
