SUMMARY:Introduction to Egg Tempera Painting with Kathy Hodge
DESCRIPTION:Limited spots available – register today! \nCost: $175 for Members\, $200 for Not-Yet-Members \nRegister Now\n  \nDiscover the ancient art of egg tempera painting! In this hands-on workshop\, you’ll explore the rich history and unique qualities of this luminous medium while developing your own creative expression. \nYou’ll learn essential techniques\, including: \n\nMixing vibrant pigment pastes from scratch\nTempering with egg yolk to create your paint\nApplying paint to the panel using both traditional methods and experimental approaches\n\nWhether you’re a beginner or experienced artist\, this workshop offers a unique opportunity to connect with a time-honored medium used by masters throughout history. Limited spots available—register today! \nAbout the workshop: \nFrom 4th-century Egyptians to medieval altarpiece artists\, to contemporary painters\, artists have chosen egg tempera for its permanence and unique luminosity. Although an ancient technique\, this fascinating medium is really very simple and economical to use. \nIn this 2-day workshop\, Kathy will demonstrate how to make tempera paints using egg yolk\, dry pigments\, and a little water. The first class will cover examples of egg tempera painting through the ages\, how to make the egg tempera paint\, the materials needed to get started\, best practices for handling pigments\, and painting techniques such as brushwork\, glazing\, sponging\, and scumbling. Sample panels will be provided\, as well as a larger panel for each student’s final painting. After the demonstration\, students will mix their own egg tempera paints\, try it out on practice panels\, and then transfer a drawing to a larger panel. \nPrerequisites:\nStudents should have some painting experience in any medium. \nAbout the Instructor:\nKathy Hodge is known for her oil paintings\, but after “inheriting” the egg tempera supplies of magic realist painter Louise Marianetti\, she became intrigued by the technique and has worked it into her studio practice. She attended RISD through her junior year as a painting major and has a BFA in painting from the Swain School of Design in New Bedford. She has exhibited her paintings in many one person shows and has been appointed Artist-in-Residence in 13 National Parks and 2 National Forests across the country. She was the recipient of a Rhode Island State Council on the Arts Painting Fellowship in 2017.

SUMMARY:Annual Kent dur Russell Lecture with Alice Isabella Sullivan
DESCRIPTION:Spatial Icons: The Communion of the Apostles in Medieval Art and Ritual\nFree admission. Registration is required\, please kindly RSVP below by Friday\, June 12.  \nRegister\n  \nThe Communion of the Apostles – a theme common to Byzantine and Slavic icons\, manuscript decorations\, textiles\, liturgical objects\, and mural cycles – presents a liturgical interpretation of the Last Supper. This image type display symmetrical compositions that center on a single or double-figure of Christ at an altar\, officiating the Eucharistic bread and wine to the twelve apostles before him\, arranged in various configurations. These images thus show two diachronic events\, either chronologically or out of sequence but meant to be understood as unfolding in a temporal continuum. In examining the iconographic developments of The Communion of the Apostles theme in various media in the Byzantine and Slavic cultural spheres\, this lecture considers the temporal and mimetic effects\, as well as the functional fluidity of this image type in medieval art and ritual. \nAbout the Speaker:\nAlice Isabella Sullivan\, PhD\, is Assistant Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of the History of Art and Architecture at Tufts University. She specializes in the artistic production of Eastern Europe and the Byzantine-Slavic cultural spheres in the period between the 14th and 16th centuries. Sullivan is the author of the award-winning book The Eclectic Visual Culture of Medieval Moldavia (Brill\, 2023)\, Europe’s Eastern Christian Frontier (ARC\, 2024)\, and co-editor of several volumes. In addition\, she is co-director of the Sinai Digital Archive\, and co-founder of North of Byzantium and Map¬ping Eastern Europe – two initiatives that explore the history\, art\, and culture of the northern frontiers of the Byzantine Empire in Eastern Europe during the medieval and early modern periods. \nRegister early\, space is limited! Please make sure to RSVP by Friday\, June 12. \nSpecial thanks to Edward Russell for his support of the Annual Kent dur Russell Lecture.
