Join us for a fun and free day at the Museum, where everyone is welcome to explore our iconic art collection! Enjoy complimentary admission all day, thanks to the Nypro Foundation.

Family Guide and Craft Activity

Celebrate the Holy Woman of the Icon Museum collection. This self-guided tour will take visitors through our galleries to discover icons of Mary, Mother of God, and the many marvelous women glorified by the Orthodox Church. Use our craft buffet to make a homemade card or gift.

Additional Activity sponsored by Freedom’s Way

Explore the symbolism of colors used in icons and the importance for iconographers of getting the tone and color exactly right. Experiment with creating colors and tones using a paint similar to what is used by iconographers using gum arabic and pigments; participants will be encouraged to make different tones and create a monochromatic painting that conveys an emotion. Students can look for inspiration with examples in our galleries.

This program is offered by The Icon Museum & Study Center as part of the Hidden Treasures Festival of Nature, Culture & History, an annual month-long celebration showcasing events and activities hosted by local partners celebrating the unique places, objects, and stories of the Freedom’s Way National Heritage Area. Hidden Treasures programs are free and open to the public.
