SUMMARY:Films: Echo of the Festival
DESCRIPTION:**EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED**\n\n\n\nJoin us for a showing of two documentary films from the NYC Independent Eastern European documentary film festival\, Famine (2023\, 77 min) and Theodore Strawinsky: I Paint Not as I See\, but as I Look (2024\, 30 min). There will be an intermission and light refreshments. Both films have English subtitles.\n\nThe documentary film Famine created by independent Russian filmmakers Alexander Arkhangelsky\, Maxim Kurnikov\, and Tatyana Sorokina\, was prohibited from screening in the Russian Federation in 2023. It premiered at the 2023 film festival in NYC. The film highlights the terrible famine in the Russian Volga-river region in the 1920s and the activity of the American ARA and several dozen other international organizations\, which worked in Soviet Russia at the time\, helping people survive. Famine reflects the incredible effort of American social and medical representatives in their struggle for the principles of humanity against Soviet authorities. It is not only the story of political decisions but\, first and foremost\, the story of humanism\, and should not be forgotten.\n\nThe documentary film Theodore Strawinsky: I Paint Not as I See\, but as I Look is dedicated to the Swiss artist of Russian heritage\, Theodore Strawinsky (1907-1989)\, son of the great composer Igor Stravinsky. This 30-minute documentary was made by the Strawinsky family – Theodore’s granddaughter and great-grandson – with support from the Stravinsky Foundation. This biopic presents numerous portraits and paintings made by the artist; the viewers can listen to his voice; his granddaughter Marie gives the detailed story of this extraordinary painter.
