You can join in person or via Zoom. \nThis month’s book is Secondhand Time: The Last Soviets by Svetlana Alexievich. \nIn Secondhand Time\, Alexievich chronicles the demise of communism. Everyday Russian citizens recount the past thirty years\, showing us what life was like during the fall of the Soviet Union and what it’s like to live in the new Russia left in its wake. Through interviews spanning 1991 to 2012\, Alexievich takes us behind the propaganda and contrived media accounts\, giving us a panoramic portrait of contemporary Russia and Russians who still carry memories of oppression\, terror\, famine\, massacres—but also of pride in their country\, hope for the future\, and a belief that everyone was working and fighting together to bring about a utopia. SUMMARY:Icons After Dark: Encountering the Icon through Slow Looking
DESCRIPTION:$10 for members and $20 for not-yet-members; Limited to 25 attendees \nRegister\n  \nJoin Icon Museum staff for an intimate evening of slow looking and shared discovery. \nSlow looking has become something of a popular phenomenon in the world of art appreciation. This practice invites us to step back from the flickering images of our fast-paced world and spend a generous amount of time observing a single work of art\, uncovering details that typically go unnoticed. This practice lends itself particularly well to the icons in our collection\, which were originally created for deep\, prayerful contemplation. \nAttendees will break into small groups and will be guided through the slow-looking experience by members of the Icon Museum staff. Afterwards\, participants will gather back together to share their observations over drinks and light refreshments.

DESCRIPTION:Encountering the Sacred Image: Highlights from the Icon Museum and Study Center\nSYMPOSIUM\nRegistration is required and now open. $150 for Museum members and $185 for non-members. \nRegister\n  \nEncountering the Sacred Image is an international symposium hosted at the Icon Museum and Study Center that brings together leading scholars from around the world to share new research on Greek and Russian icons in the Museum’s collection. Participants will present on a selection of highlights from the Icon Museum’s permanent collection\, none of which have been previously published or extensively studied. The conference papers will serve as the core of a new museum catalogue\, which will offer a new perspective on the history of Orthodox icons in a manner accessible and engaging for art historians\, museumgoers\, and icon lovers alike. \nThe symposium will be held in conjunction with a collaborative exhibition\, featuring masterpieces from the Ikonen-Museum Recklinghausen. Attendees of the symposium are invited to attend the opening celebration. \nVisit the Symposium page to view the schedule.

Film duration – 52 minutes.\nPlease note\, the program ends after the Museum is closed.\nThe galleries will not be open to view after the showing. \nYou are invited to the U.S. premiere of Living Prayer in Christianity\, a contemplative documentary that explores the inner practices\, sacred iconography\, and daily monastic rhythms of Orthodox Christian tradition. Director Jean-Claude Lubtchansky explores the essence of Christianity with the support of icons\, which serve as windows to the sacred\, making the invisible visible. Their development is closely linked to theology\, liturgy\, and monastic practice. \nThe film highlights three main locations where icons continue to serve as forms of prayer within Christianity: Saint Catherine’s Monastery at the foot of Mount Sinai\, the Greek monastic peninsula of Mount Athos\, and various sites in Russia. \nThe narration is based on sacred traditional Orthodox sources. \nJean-Claude Lubtchansky was a French documentary filmmaker who\, over his long career\, made important contributions to educational television in France\, making films on such figures as Galileo and Leonardo da Vinci. His deep interest in esotericism and spirituality led him to make a trilogy of documentaries on G. I. Gurdjieff entitled The Seekers of Truth (2005) and a series of films on Shintoism\, Buddhism\, Hinduism and the present film on Christianity. \n
